Job Scope

To provide an excellent financial control, accounting, administration, ledger and cash management service to the Society in a timely, accurate and economic manner. To ensure that statutory reporting is presented in a timely, appropriate and accurate manner. To ensure that appropriate control and authorisation processes are in place and that the administration of financial activities supports the society efficiently and effectively. To further develop the financial services of the Society. To manage all internal and external audits. To complete the quarterly VAT returns and oversee submission of annual tax returns. To manage and develop the team, motivating them to deliver a high standard of work in an environment of continuous improvement and attention to detail.


  • To ensure the assets of the Society are properly controlled and accounted for
  • To mitigate financial risk through fraud or misuse by ensuring that appropriate and robust financial policies and procedures and in place and are adhered to
  • To ensure robust and best in class financial procedures are in place for all financial transactions
  • To ensure the statutory accounts are produced for the Society and its subsidiaries in accordance with the latest SORP and Reporting Standards, as applicable, in a timely, accurate and appropriate manner
  • To operate the Society’s financial administration and accounting accurately and in a timely manner taking due regard to existing Policy and Procedures and leading in the development of those policies to ensure that an appropriate, efficient, control environment is in place and maintained
  • To manage the Purchase and Sales ledgers (with the Finance Assistants) and to monitor the credit control process and ensure the policy is adhered to. To ensure debt outstanding to the Society is the lowest possible
  • To manage all internal and external audits ensuring that all information is available, all queries are answered and all recommendations are followed up
  • To facilitate all areas of the Society in its activities through the provision of effective payment, invoicing, purchase order, expenses and credit control functions
  • To be the main point of contact in the relationships between the Society and their banking partners including ensuring that the systems to allow payments from the bank accounts are operational and access to them is controlled
  • To provide effective treasury management by providing long and medium term cash flow forecasts and overseeing the production of daily/weekly cash flows, ensuring that funds are available
  • To ensure that the Society’s investments are valued regularly with all gains and losses recognised correctly in the accounts
  • To prepare cash flow and investment models allowing senior management and officers to understand the Society’s investment portfolio, its endowment and associated cash flows
  • To ensure that VAT and tax returns and gift aid claims are prepared, reconciled and filed on time, and to be the main point of contact with HMRC
  • To ensure that the delegated authority levels are kept within agreed levels
  • To ensure that the chart of accounts and the accounting system users are kept up to date
  • To be responsible for the line management of the Financial Accountant, Finance Assistant (Purchase ledger and Finance assistant (Sales ledger)
  • To carry out other ad-hoc duties as determined by the Head of Finance

Key Knowledge and Skills Required

  • ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent qualification, with at least 2 years’ post-qualification experience.    
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of managing computerised accounting systems
  • Able to be accurate and work to deadlines even under pressure      and to work co-operatively with others in a team
  • Able to learn quickly and work without close supervision when necessary                                                                             
  • Able to use initiative and to establish own priorities
  • To be self confident and inquisitive. To be demanding of others when appropriate.
