The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. The Society’s fundamental purpose is to recognise, promote and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity. One of the ways in which the Society supports its mission is through the medals and awards programme which is administered by the Scientific Programmes Team.   The team has two Medals and Awards Officers, reporting to the Senior Medals and Awards Officer. They have a varied remit encompassing administration of the annual nomination cycle, committee management and the planning and delivery of a portfolio of prize lectures.   Proven experience of managing complex multi-strand projects is essential as is an ability to quickly build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Its activities include work on policy, scientific publishing, and the award of grants.   The overall aims of the role will be:   To manage and oversee the offices of the Society’s President, Officers and Executive Director, of the Royal Society working closely with the Director of Fellowship, Strategy and Governance and other members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and a team of personal assistants, ensuring the delivery of high-quality administrative services. (The President and Officers of the Royal Society are trustees and Fellows of the Society. The Executive Director is its Chief Executive).   To co-ordinate support functions to the President, Officers and Executive Director, ensuring a seamless overall service.   To provide support directly to the Society’s President, as his personal assistant (the President changes every 5 years)   To manage and provide secretarial support for meetings of the Society’s Officers weekly and to ensure relevant papers are sent ahead of and following meetings.   To manage a team of three to four other Personal Assistants providing direct administration and diary support to the five Officers of the Society and the Executive Director, working for continuous improvement in service.     To act as an ambassador for the President and Executive Director within and beyond the Society, building close and effective communication between the corporate centre and internal and external stakeholders.   You will provide oversight of the work of this office as a whole and provide additional support to the Executive Director, working with her PA, on request, particularly regarding more complex correspondence and the co-ordination of briefing and information flows across the Society.    Key outcomes of the role:   Society staff have a point of reference for advice and guidance on handling issues requiring input from the Society’s leadership and that the Society’s standards are maintained with regular and reliable communication on behalf of the executive office.   The Society’s leadership is supported with a clear system of oversight, tracking communications with and from their offices, key weekly meetings are well planned, and they are briefed on issues requiring their attention when necessary.   The team of personal assistants is well supported and motivated, providing a continuously improving system of administrative support to the President, Executive Director, and Officers and cover for leave and absence is seamless and well planned   The President, Executive Director and Officers are provided with effective administrative support, maximising their impact as the leadership of the Society.   There is oversight of the programme of meetings and events that Officers and the Executive Director participate in, and they are well prepared for them.   Senior Leadership and Officer meetings are managed to a high level. You will work alongside other PAs providing support to the Officers of the Society.   You will work in the Society’s offices near St James’s Park. The Society has played a part in some of the most fundamental, significant and life-changing discoveries in scientific history and Royal Society scientists continue to make outstanding contributions to science across the wide breadth of research areas.   Our major schools’ engagement programme includes:   - Partnership Grants of up to £3000 for schools and colleges to enable students, aged 5 – 18, to carry out investigative science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) projects, in partnership with a STEM professional:Partnership Grants | Royal Society   - Developing Evidence-based resources to support excellence in the teaching of science, maths and computing, in particular around scientific literacy and practical science.   - Tailored schools programme at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition.   This role will specifically be responsible for identifying and developing links with STEM partners, supporting, and training the STEM professionals involved in our Partnership Grants scheme. They will support the STEM professionals to design research projects, for schools, based on the research being undertaken by scientists. They will also support Society-funded scientists across a range of schemes including our early career research fellowships (University Research Fellows, Dorothy Hodgkin Fellows  and Career Development Fellows) and schemes that have schools’ engagement aspects such as the APEX awards, and the Public Engagement awards.   The Senior Schools Engagement Officer (scientific liaison) will support and manage a new pilot initiative of seed grants within the Partnership Grants programme which are specifically designed to support organsiations (educational, higher education and/or industry) to develop relationships which will lead to impactful and long-term engagement between local schools and STEM professionals and provide a pathway for schools to apply for a Partnership Grant. They will also ensure that best practice is shared across these pilots and impact case studies collected.   This rolewill work with the Head of Schools Engagement, Schools Engagement Manager, and other members of the Schools Engagement team to manage and develop the Society’s schools engagement programme in line with the Schools Engagement strategy. Equally they will work with senior Grants teams to develop outreach skills and opportunities for funded scientists, therefore helping to inspire and enthuse the next generation of scientists.   The post holder should have teaching experience in UK schools or colleges and should have a good understanding of curriculum-linked design. They should also have good organisational skills, a commitment to high standards throughout their work, and a good attention to detail. In return this position offers opportunities for the successful candidate to contribute to a new and exciting programme of education outreach activities and to help develop successful schemes which benefit scientists, teachers and young people. Volunteer at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2024   The Royal Society is looking for reliable and highly motivated volunteers to be part of the 2024 Summer Science Exhibition, taking place on 2 – 7 July 2024 in London.   The Summer Science Exhibition is the Society’s flagship event, attracting thousands of visitors over the course of 6 days. This year, we have fourteen fantastic flagship exhibits and many more interactive activities, talks and workshops for families. It showcases the most exciting cutting-edge science and technology research from across the UK and provides a unique opportunity for members of the public to chat to scientists and ask them questions about their work.   With so much going on, we rely on our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the success of this event. We are looking for people who are happy to engage in a wide variety of tasks, have good team working skills, are comfortable talking to the public, have an interest in science and, above all, are enthusiastic.   The exhibition takes place 2 – 7 July. Working hours are flexible although we would usually expect volunteers to commit to at least 8 - 12 hours across one or more days of the exhibition. Although this volunteering opportunity offers ideal experience for someone looking to get involved in science public engagement or events management, we are also keen to hear from those who are simply passionate about science.   Diversity and Inclusion are an essential part of the Royal Society’s mission to recognise, promote and support excellence in science, and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.   Applications are welcome from everybody regardless of the characteristics they possess, protected or otherwise. You will need to be available to attend this training session in order to qualify as a volunteer for the Exhibition.   We will cover travel expenses and provide meals and refreshments during exhibition opening times.
