It is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering and medicine.   As the Royal Society’s research funding portfolio continues to grow, new opportunities and risks are emerging within the UK’s research environment. Showing leadership and demonstrating good practice is a strategic aim of the Royal Society grants team. A key objective is to develop and maintain a policy framework that sets the standard within research funding by addressing emerging issues in research and improving the environment for those who work within it. Working within a tight-knit team, the Grant Operations Manager, Governance and Compliance will work in collaboration across the Royal Society to implement and manage the Grant Section’s evolving statutory obligations including subsidy control, trusted research and national security.   This includes: - Responsibility for risk mitigation and compliance activities relating to key statutory obligations, particularly the National Security and Investment Act and Trusted Research and the Subsidy Control Act. - The delivery of activities and guidance in support of the Royal Society’s commitment to areas of research funding best practice, particularly around Research Integrity, Environmental sustainability, and the use of animals and human tissue in scientific research. - The management of an ongoing programme of review and improvement of the Society’s grants research funding policies and procedures, such as the Society’s commitments to the research concordats it supports. The Royal Society is an endorsing body for the Global Talent Visa, applying our sector expertise to manage visa endorsements for research and innovation professionals wishing to work in the UK. This post will play an important role in helping the Royal Society expand the Global Talent visa, which is vital to the mobility of the academic and research community. Working with colleagues and Fellows you will work as part of a small team to manage the visa endorsement application process, taking ownership of internal processing and being responsible for the management and reporting of confidential data. You will also help develop and deliver external engagement, including working with other endorsing bodies, the Home Office, as well as other principal stakeholders, in particular immigration and HR advisors at UK universities and research institutes. Reporting to the Financial Reporting Manager, the team of four Management Accountants are business partners to the budget holders of the Society and support the organisation to make informed decisions by providing meaningful analysis of financial data on both a regular and ad-hoc basis. The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. The Society’s fundamental purpose is to recognise, promote and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity. One of the ways in which the Society supports its mission is through the medals and awards programme which is administered by the Scientific Programmes Team.   The team has two Medals and Awards Officers, reporting to the Senior Medals and Awards Officer. They have a varied remit encompassing administration of the annual nomination cycle, committee management and the planning and delivery of a portfolio of prize lectures.   Proven experience of managing complex multi-strand projects is essential as is an ability to quickly build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. Experience of committee management and / or event management would also be advantageous.   The post holder will also be expected to contribute to other projects and events outside their remit to support the team’s activities as a whole.   Reports to: Senior Medals and Awards Officer Line manages: None Location: Remote and minimum 2 days per wk at Carlton House Terrace, London (This role will also include out of hours working) Hours: Full time, 35 hours a week (including some evening and weekend working Band C: £33, 000 to £42, 000 Contract type: Permanent    The application closing date is 5 May 2024   First stage Interviews will take place week commencing 6 May and second stage interviews week commencing 13 May.

Its activities include work on policy, scientific publishing, and the award of grants.   The overall aims of the role will be:   To manage and oversee the offices of the Society’s President, Officers and Executive Director, of the Royal Society working closely with the Director of Fellowship, Strategy and Governance and other members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and a team of personal assistants, ensuring the delivery of high-quality administrative services. (The President and Officers of the Royal Society are trustees and Fellows of the Society. The Executive Director is its Chief Executive).   To co-ordinate support functions to the President, Officers and Executive Director, ensuring a seamless overall service.   To provide support directly to the Society’s President, as his personal assistant (the President changes every 5 years)   To manage and provide secretarial support for meetings of the Society’s Officers weekly and to ensure relevant papers are sent ahead of and following meetings.   To manage a team of three to four other Personal Assistants providing direct administration and diary support to the five Officers of the Society and the Executive Director, working for continuous improvement in service.     To act as an ambassador for the President and Executive Director within and beyond the Society, building close and effective communication between the corporate centre and internal and external stakeholders.   You will provide oversight of the work of this office as a whole and provide additional support to the Executive Director, working with her PA, on request, particularly regarding more complex correspondence and the co-ordination of briefing and information flows across the Society.    Key outcomes of the role:   Society staff have a point of reference for advice and guidance on handling issues requiring input from the Society’s leadership and that the Society’s standards are maintained with regular and reliable communication on behalf of the executive office.   The Society’s leadership is supported with a clear system of oversight, tracking communications with and from their offices, key weekly meetings are well planned, and they are briefed on issues requiring their attention when necessary.   The team of personal assistants is well supported and motivated, providing a continuously improving system of administrative support to the President, Executive Director, and Officers and cover for leave and absence is seamless and well planned   The President, Executive Director and Officers are provided with effective administrative support, maximising their impact as the leadership of the Society.   There is oversight of the programme of meetings and events that Officers and the Executive Director participate in, and they are well prepared for them.   Senior Leadership and Officer meetings are managed to a high level. Internal and external communications from the centre of the Society are managed professionally and effectively.   Reports to: Director of Fellowship, Strategy and Governance Line manages: 3-4 x Personal Assistant Roles Location: Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG                                                                             Hours: Full time, 35 hours a week. Its activities include work on policy, scientific publishing, and the award of grants.   The jobholder’s team will provide support to the Executive Director (chief executive), Dame Julie Maxton DBE.   The jobholder, together with other team members, will provide a confidential and proactive PA service including diary and inbox management, ensuring that internal and external communications are effectively managed, travel and various administrative and secretarial support services.   Your line manager will be the Senior Manager, Executive Office, and you will work closely with them. You will work alongside other PAs providing support to the Officers of the Society.   You will work in the Society’s offices near St James’s Park. Occasional hybrid working is possible, but the nature of the work will mean that on most days you will need to be present in the office to provide direct support to the Executive Director.   Reports to: Senior Manager, Executive Office, and PA to the President Line manages: n/a Location: Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG                                                                             Hours: Full time. Volunteer at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2024   The Royal Society is looking for reliable and highly motivated volunteers to be part of the 2024 Summer Science Exhibition, taking place on 2 – 7 July 2024 in London.   The Summer Science Exhibition is the Society’s flagship event, attracting thousands of visitors over the course of 6 days. This year, we have fourteen fantastic flagship exhibits and many more interactive activities, talks and workshops for families. It showcases the most exciting cutting-edge science and technology research from across the UK and provides a unique opportunity for members of the public to chat to scientists and ask them questions about their work.   With so much going on, we rely on our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the success of this event. We are looking for people who are happy to engage in a wide variety of tasks, have good team working skills, are comfortable talking to the public, have an interest in science and, above all, are enthusiastic.   The exhibition takes place 2 – 7 July. Working hours are flexible although we would usually expect volunteers to commit to at least 8 - 12 hours across one or more days of the exhibition. Although this volunteering opportunity offers ideal experience for someone looking to get involved in science public engagement or events management, we are also keen to hear from those who are simply passionate about science.   Diversity and Inclusion are an essential part of the Royal Society’s mission to recognise, promote and support excellence in science, and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.   Applications are welcome from everybody regardless of the characteristics they possess, protected or otherwise. Tasks during the exhibition will include: - Interacting with the public, greeting visitors and responding to queries - Briefing school groups and teachers visiting the exhibition - Staffing the information desk - Signposting people towards the building and assisting with queue management at busy times - Supporting feedback of the event through observations and data reporting - Administrative tasks including evaluation and monitoring emails.   Volunteers will be given a full day of training prior to the exhibition, scheduled for Tuesday 11 June 2024, 10.00am - 4.30pm at the Royal Society in London. You will need to be available to attend this training session in order to qualify as a volunteer for the Exhibition.   We will cover travel expenses and provide meals and refreshments during exhibition opening times. Volunteers must be aged 18 or over and no longer in full time secondary education.   Next steps If you are interested, please submit a CV and a brief cover letter of no more than one page explaining why you would like to volunteer and why you think you would be suitable for the role by Sunday 12 May 2024.   Your cover letter must include information about your availability during the Exhibition week (2 – 7 July) and contact details for two referees.   Interviews will take place by phone between commencing 14 – 24 May.
